M4 System Studies. Parallel Phase A contracts. Parallel Phase B1 contracts for the selected M4 mission following the Phase A. The ARIEL mission will perform infrared (2-8 micron) spectroscopic observations of 500 warm/hot transiting exoplanets, to determine the chemical composition and physical conditions of exoplanet atmospheres. The spacecraft builds on the EChO M3 study heritage, with simplifications on the payload. The payload consists of: – a 3 mirror off-axis afocal telescope (1.1 m x 0.7 m M1) mounted in horizontal configuration as for EChO (a previous M3 candidate mission) and Planck (a flown mission) – a thermal shield assembly with 3 V-grooves for passively cooling the telescope to 70 K – a spectrometer covering 2-8 micron split into 2 channels – a VNIR instrument comprising 4 photometric channels (2 wide band, also used as FGS, and 2 narrow band)
