AIM is a small mission of opportunity to characterize the Dydimos binary asteroid system while demonstrating technologies enabling future small and medium missions. AIM is part of a cooperation with NASA on a precursor asteroid hazard mitigation mission, the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA), made up of two independent components: the US-led asteroid kinetic impactor, the Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART), and AIM. The main goal of the AIDA cooperation is to jointly prove the ability to modify the dynamics of Didymos in a way that is measurable both by the AIM observing spacecraft and from Earth-based facilities. The study will be focused on the detailed technical and programmatic definition of the space system and requirements. It will comprise two phases: the first phase to bring the technical and programmatic definition to PRR level and the second phase to an intermediate SRR level.
