The contract will tackle an important item missing from the ESA’s current software model for its space science missions, namely thelong-term preservation of scientific data analysis software. Once a project has finished and its specialist operational and softwareengineering personnel have dispersed, new technologies can enable long-term preservation of the data analysis software as computeroperating systems evolve. The work is an initial study that will entail four steps: first, cast the data analysis software of two current and two historical ESA missions into Virtual Machines (VMs); second, prototype tools to perform data analysis in VMs for standard and expert users; third, benchmark VM performance in different computing environments; and fourth, assess the prospects of a general solution for the long-term preservation of data analysis software for all ESA space science missions.
