M4 System Studies Parallel Phase A contracts. Parallel Phase B1 contracts for the selected M4 mission following the Phase A. THOR will address the fundamental science theme “Turbulent energy dissipation and particle energization” which ties in with ESA’s Cosmic Vision. In particular, THOR will address the following specific science questions: – How is plasma heated and particles accelerated? – How is the dissipated energy partitioned? – How does dissipation operate in different regimes of turbulence? The THOR spacecraft would be launched to a geocentric High Elliptic Orbit (HEO) with an orbital plane close to the ecliptic plane (10 deg inclination). The nominal mission duration is 3 years, split in 3 phases of 1 year each.
