Potential novel scientific developments and applications may emerge from ESA’s Earth Explorer mission Aeolus. The mission was launched in August 2018 and will provide over 3 years of data to the user community. Aeolus provides global observations of wind profiles from space, along with information on aerosols and clouds. Further it will advance our understanding of atmospheric dynamics as well as provide much needed information to improve weather forecasts. This state-of-the-art mission also contributes to climate research. The overarching goal of Aeolus+ Innovation is to advance well beyond the primary mission products and scientific objectives of Aeolus and explore the full potential of this new technology in space in terms of new observation products, new science domains and new applications. ESA plans to initiate maximum six generally independent studies under the overall budget frame given in the cover letter.
