The objective of the activity is to develop and test the necessary adaptations for the adoption of 5G New Radio (5G-NR) precoding, multi-antenna and beam management techniques in MSS systems (GSO and NGSO) with beam-hopping capability and to assess the costs and benefits of such adoption. To achieve this, the activity will develop a representative software testbed that will allow to gauge performance gains, identify opportunities and constraints, and assess the complexity and overall impact of adopting NR waveform features in MSS systems.Targeted Improvements:Enabling the integration of satellite in 5G.Description:The latest release of the 5G New Radio (NR) standard offers a very dynamic and flexible framework in terms of framing structure, frequency duplexing (either full or half duplex terminals), and control signalling to support multi antenna and beam management techniques. In parallel, the 3GPP standardization group has endorsed the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks for the provision of 5G broadband services in Release 17. An essential aspect that will be key for the fast and successful integration of satellite networks in 5G is the adoption of the same technologies and re-using as much as possible the available chipsets in the market. To enable this opportunity, it is crucial to develop the necessary adaptations for the adoption of such flexible digital processing techniques and multi-antenna beamforming techniques in MSS systems, and to submit necessary adaptations to the 3GPP standardization groups.To achieve this, the activity shall go through the following steps: a) Review the latest 3GPP specifications (i.e., 5G Release 16/17) regarding multi-antenna transmission and reception along with radio beam management solutions including the flexible numerology, digital precoding, and beamforming aspects with the aim at identifying all critical aspects related to implementing this framework in satellite beam-hopping based systems; b) Identify the necessary tools (e.g., software) to first replicate the 5G-NR precoding and beam management framework, and then to assess the expected performance in satellite beam-hopping systems (e.g., system capacity gain); c) Implement the proposed software testbed facility for in depth evaluation of all set of Layer 1/2 procedures related to the support of 5G-NR precoding and beam management techniques; d) Thorough assessment of the suitability of these techniques for their adoption by MSS satellite systemswith beam hopping capabilities; e) Development and testing of the necessary adaptations; f) Propose an adequate dissemination plan of the outcomes of the activity and standardization roadmap.
