Although there is good coverage of accurate air pressure measurements over land, there are vast areas of the world's oceans with few or no measurements at all. Movement of weather systems and storms over oceans are driven by air pressure gradients. A satellite-based system capable of providing regular, highly accurate air pressure measurements (1mbar) would be of immense benefit to weather forecasting and storm prediction. This is currently not available.An initial GSP-funded study, "Active Microwave Air Pressure Sounder" (GSP 13/013), showed that the concept of differential absorption by oxygen of radar signals in V-band (50-60GHz) can work from space. Airborne demonstrators have been flown by the US which have proved that accuracies of 1mbar are indeed possible. However, these were fairly limited capability FMCW radars. For a spaceborne system, an FMCW radar would not be suitable since it would require two antennas creating a very large and expensive instrument and so instead, a pulsed system needs to be built and tested to prove the concept further. In addition, various techniques for increasing the number of independent samples (needed to achieve 1mbar accuracy) have been proposed and these could be usefully tested and verified with a flexible airborne system.The activity encompasses the following tasks:- Review and interpretation of the instrument requirements established in the GSP study for an airborne demonstrator-Creation of a baseline design of the instrument- Manufacture and ground testing of the instrument- Identification of a suitable airborne platform and analysis of installation and certification requirementsProcurement Policy: C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl.
