An European Ground Motion Service now available from Copernicus

The Copernicus Land Monitoring Service now has a new service: EGMS —European Ground Motion Service.

The service provides consistent and reliable information regarding natural and anthropogenic ground motion over the Copernicus Participating States and across national borders, with millimetre accuracy.

The EGMS represents a baseline for ground motion applications at continental, national and local level, including Romania.

The first EGMS products measure ground motions occurring between February 2015 to December 2020 (known as the ‘baseline’). Three updates are planned annually thereafter, the next adding ground motions occurring up to the end of 2021.

The European Ground Motion Service (EGMS) provides an unprecedented opportunity to study geohazards and human-induced deformation such as slow-moving landslides, subsidence due to groundwater exploitation or underground mining, volcanic unrests and many more. The EGMS also serves as a starting point for investigation of ground motion affecting buildings and linear infrastructures.

The EGMS is based on the multi-temporal interferometric analysis of Sentinel-1 radar images at full resolution. This technique allows identifying reliable measurement points for which ground motion velocity values and time series of deformation are extracted. Such measurement points usually coincide with buildings, artificial structures and non-vegetated areas in general. Global navigation satellite systems data are used as calibration of the interferometric measurements.

EGMS data are aimed at anyone interested in geological hazards, most of which involve some form of ground instability.  Besides a more casual interest, EGMS data will appeal to students, geoscience organisations and researchers, those responsible for planning and development control, civil engineers, insurers, asset owners and managers, and civil protection agencies.
