30 June 2020 is Asteroid Day

on 29 June 2020

30 June is the International Asteroid Day, a United Nations recognised international event, organised for raising awareness on the risks of asteroid impacts and the methods to protect the Earth. The event was established on this date in the memory of the Tunguska, Siberia impact that took place in 1908, and was the largest asteroid impact in the recent history of the Earth.

The special day is marked with several online events, including some organised in Romania.

Romanian cosmonaut Dumitru Dorin Prunariu, Honorary President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), will be a guest on the show „Noi și Cerul” (Us and the Sky) on Columna TV Romania, together with other space science guests.

Bucharest Astroclub is also organising a thematic conference that will be steamed online starting at 19.30.

The Asteroid Day is a dynamic awareness and educational program meant to inspire the world about asteroids, to explain their role in the formation of our Universe, how we can use their resources, how asteroids can pave the way for future exploration and finally how we can protect our planet from asteroid impacts. Asteroid Day is a programme run by the Asteroid Foundation, a Luxembourg non-profit organisation.
