Based on a consultation with the scientific community via a dedicated Call for Ideas, the Agency has identified, as the most promising field of research for future applications, the research in the area of production and further processing and analysing of 3D biological samples. To respond to this request from the scientific community, as objective of this ITT, the Agency will develop a 3D BioSystem, composed of a 3D-Bioprinter, capable of generating in orbit 3D biological samples, an Incubator, equipped with centrifuges and 3D-cell culture units, equipped with in-situ analysis instruments and with features to stimulate several different types of biological samples. With this development, samples can be produced in orbit in the 3D-bioprinter facility and immediately further processed on the Incubator via the 3D cell culture units, establishing therefore a complete in orbit system, allowing an end-to-end generation, maturation, stimulation, analysis and processing of the samples. Additionally, samples coming from ground can be directly processed in the 3D-cell culture units, while samples from the 3D-bioprinter can also be returned immediately to ground after the 3D bioprinting process.The complete assembly composed by the Incubator, the 3D-Bioprinter and the 3D-cell culture will provide a powerful and unique system to sustain a large number of experiments, using the latest technologies. Installation of the 3D-BioSystemisplanned for the Columbus module, but installation in other modules could also be foreseen.
