4DHYDROLOGY-HYPER RESOLUTION - EXPRO+

The overarching goal of this project is to foster a closer collaboration between both the EO water cycle and hydrology community (especially those teams involved in developing novel high resolution EO data products) and the modelling community engaged in advancing "hyper resolution" modelling of the hydrological cycle at large scales (regional/continental). This project shall bring togetherthese two communities to undertake a wide ambitious round robin and benchmarking exercise leading to a sound assessment of both theaccuracies and uncertainties of the latest advances in EO-based data of hydrological variables and its impact on a set of the most advanced high resolution hydrological models. Such an exercise shall address, at least: A thorough comparative assessment of a wide representative set of different novel and emerging high and very high-resolution EO-based products (Approx. 1Km resolution or higher) of different hydrological variables A thorough model comparison and benchmarking exercise including a detailed assessmentofthe impact of the use of the different novel EO hydrological data products (reference data products) into a set of advanced veryhigh-resolution hydrological models at both regional and basin scales and resolution equal or below 1Km. In addition, the projectshall implement a number of Science Cases assessing: The current capacity and limitations of high resolution EO products to accurately represent and contribute to close the hydrological cycle at basin and regional scales. The potential and limitations of the effective combination of EO datasets and advanced high resolution hydrological models to serve a wide variety of applications including, water resources management, agriculture, and natural hazards predictions and response.This project shall also promote a community building effort and a community roadmap to advance towards a high (hyper) resolution characterization of the terrestrial hydrologyat continental scale.As a result, this project shall establish a solid scientific basis for future developments and next steps (also by ESA scientific activities) towards a high (hyper) resolution characterization of the terrestrial hydrology at continental scale to ultimately serve a wide variety of applications including, water resources management, agriculture, and natural hazards predictions and response.
