The objective of the activity is to carry out a variety of radio performance specification studies for 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) whenever they share a coverage region with 5G Terrestrial Networks (TN) employing comprehensive TN/NTN link layer simulation tools. The output of the studies is to be shared with 3GPP 5G and other standardisation bodies in order to influence the specification of 5G NTN radio performance. Targeted Improvements: Influence the specification of 5G NTN radio performance characteristics in various standardisation bodies. Description: As part of the ever-increasing role of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) in the 3GPP 5G standard, starting from Release 16 there has been an increasing need to understand the impact and limits of the various flavours of TN and NTN sharing the same coverage and adjacent frequency channels. 3GPP's RAN4 Working Group, dealing with radio performance and protocol aspects, is planning to define NTN RF requirements based on a variety of relevant sources including, but not limited to, ITU-RRadio Regulations, relevant national regulations, pre-existing Harmonised Standards developed for example in ETSI, coexistence studies approved by regulatory bodies and/or 3GPP specifications. Such technical inputs are a crucial opportunity for NTN to influence the adoption of favourable RF requirements that can ultimately either enable or preclude the use of NTN in various 5G scenarios. The objective of this activity is then to carry out a variety of radio performance specification studies for 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) whenever they share a coverage region with 5G Terrestrial Networks (TN). To that end, the activity will develop comprehensive TN/NTN link layer simulator and then carry out detailed system simulations based on state-of-the-art TN/NTN channel models and characteristic parameterization. The list of simulation scenarios shall include combinations of several type of networks: NTN Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) with TN eMBB, NTN Internet-of-Things (IoT) with TN IoT, NTN eMBB with NTN IoT, NTN eMBB with NTN eMBB, NTNeMBB with NTN IoT, NTN IoT with NTN IoT, where NTN shall be either LEO or GEO and the studies shall cover exemplary NTN bands in Frequency Range 1 (FR1) and Frequency Range 2 (FR2). Furthermore, for gaining general insight on the coexistence between TN and NTN, additional frequency bands beyond the 3GPP defined bands may be considered. The studies shall rely on 3GPP and ITU-R methodologies. Typical metrics to be evaluated are interference to noise ratio (I/N), Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio (ACLR), Adjacent Channel Selectivity(ACS), throughput degradation etc. The aim of the studies shall be to come up with representative and well-justified radio requirements for NTN and also identify coexistence opportunities.
