The objective of the activity is to design, manufacture and test a compact VHF/UHF high power filter for small satellites using advanced manufacturing processes.Targeted Improvements:- 40% reduction in footprint compared to the state of the art- at least 40% loss reduction compared to planar technologies and- up to 30 W RF power handlingDescription: Small satellites (mass less than 250kg) operating in lower Earth orbit are increasingly used for the maritime, ocean tracing, and augmentation service and, together with geostationary satellites, for other communications infrastructure. These satellites require miniaturised, low loss equipment and time to market and design flexibility are key factors for the mission. In order to improve the coverage and simplify the user terminal, small satellites typically require high transmit RF power in a low frequency band. In this context bandpass filters are critical, with current solutions being limited by their power handling capability and physical volume at these frequencies. The aim of this activity is to develop a novel class of bandpass filters at VHF/UHF frequencies with a very compact size, reduced losses and a high-power handling capability (up to 30W). Such improvements could be achieved by employing miniaturised distributed resonator technology that offers flexibility in a trade-off between RF performance, volume/mass, Q-factor and power handling capability. In addition, additive manufacturing techniques would enable the freedom necessary for the bandpass filter design. The deliverables of this activity include two engineering models of miniaturised, high power, high-Q filters, one operating in the VHF band and the other in the UHFband, demonstrating the improved RF, thermal and mechanical performance.
