GeoINF focuses on the retrieval and management of the information that is in an inactive state within the geospatial information databases.

Powerful methods of extracting attributes, data structure, "data mining" and information retrieval can be combined within GeoINF system, which will support data access via Internet. Given the size of the considered databases, the scalability brings an evident interest. Moreover, the user can formulate queries according to their needs by simply interacting with the system. This involves assigning individual meanings even in semantical similar seemingly categories. 

In conclusion, although the system autonomously tends to structure the data, it retains yet the flexibility and it is adapting to the specific requirements of the user. To deliver the project GeoINF requires fundamental innovations in the oversized data analysis areas, supervised and unsupervised classification, extraction and description of image structures, all in the context of the high degree of variability characteristic to imagery, as shown below. 

Also GeoINF will strengthen national efforts for participation and inclusion in activities coordinated by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission (EC) for the use of Earth Observation data (EO) in the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES ) or other corresponding programs. GeoINF will create up an infrastructure compatiblw with the ESA systems and the European Union Satellite Centre (EU-SC) and will form the basis of an extended wider and deeper international cooperation.

Project objectives:

The project aims to interdisciplinary basic research in specific areas of information processing science for developing a new generation of concepts, methods and tools for understanding spatial and geoinformational high complexity and high volume data in a new concept focused on the human user.


  • Creating, maintaining and identifying referential data sets that include documentation and information about components (= Earth observation images and ancillary data)
  • Creating and maintaining of processed components (local or remote, obtained as a result of training with KIM or specific algorithms of features extracting)
  • Local or remote manipulation of data or components incorporating:
  • Creating and maintaining local descriptions
  • Discovery
  • Editing associated Web services
  • Using controlled aggregation workflow, Web services
  • Creating, editing and providing services SSE compatible and based on KEO flows or extraction of prior information
