There are non hermetic chip and wire solutions with good reliability in moist environment. When the die is large, to manage the thermo-mechanical stresses between die and substrate, the die is mounted on a ceramic sub-mount. The activity shall characterise the possible interference environment in the Ka shared band accounting for the relevant regulations, and to investigate techniques to mitigate interference from terrestrial systems in the Ka shared band to allow using this band forbroadband services. Targeted Improvements: Beam hopping can match offered capacity with traffic demand. Compared to uniform power and bandwidth assignment per user beam, the beam hopping provides 50% reduction of DC power consumption. Using the beam hopping, one power amplifier can serve up to 8 beams providing significant saving in required mass particularly for multi-beam systems with user link in Ka band with a large number of beams. Objective: Development & qualification test of a small Peltier / TEC (thermo-electric cooler) suitable for cooling an LNA.
Description: With the trend towards higher frequencies and multi spot applications, telecom satellite payloads are demanding much more sensitive receive section to be compatible with high data rate, low power uplinks. The noise figure (G/T) of the receive section isa critical parameter, which is minimised by a) Minimising the length of waveguide between the antenna and the electronic Low Noise Amplifier (LNA). b) Minimising the temperature of the LNA. Today this is typically achieved either by baffles or dedicated heatpipe radiators. These can achieve low temperatures (-10 degrees C) but are heavy and complex, and use up valuable radiator surfacethat would otherwise be used for payload. Furthermore it is difficult to achieve both requirements a) and b) simultaneously, if the LNA is close to the feed then it is unlikely to be close to the radiator surface, requiring a heat pipe connection which increase heat leaks and increases the required radiator surface. An LNA is a small unit (less than 100x100x100mm), and the actual powerdissipation of an LNA is very small (less than 1W),ideally suited to a small Peltier device. A low temperature could be readilyachieved on the LNA, whilst the TEC permits to reject heat at a much higher temp (50 deg.C). The fact that only the LNA is cold allows to minimise heat leaks, and the rejected heat could then be transported to the radiator surfaces via a mini or micro loop heatpipe. This would permit to: 1) maximise rf sensitivity (achieve both a very short waveguide length and a cold LNA). 2) increaseantenna design flexibility (permit to install the LNA directly on the antenna receive horn, even when the horn is on an antenna mast). 3) reduce spacecraft mass (eliminate the complex structures used today). 4) increase available spacecraft radiator surfaceforother payload items. Current TECs for space applications are all manufactured outside Europe. This activity is to a) develop a European TEC, and b) assess its performance and operation in conjunction with an LNA. The ESA Innovation Triangle Initiative (ITI) aims at supporting the fast introduction of disruptive innovations in the European space industry by combining the creativity, know-how and experience of the Research Community, Space Customers and Industry. The technical scope of ITI is large, accepting proposals of possible disruptive innovations in any technical domain applicable to space, with particular emphasis on innovations coming originally from non-space industrial or research sectors. In ITI there are three types of contract activities:

Proof of concept: fast validation of new ideas and demonstration of its advantages; ) Demonstration of feasibility and use: component and/or breadboard development up to validation in the laboratory or in a relevant environment; ) Technology Adoption: support for the technology to be adopted by an European Space company (Customer) with the final objective of includingthe developed technology in their services, products or processes. The ITI is based on a continuous call for ideas with a standing Evaluation Board that meets periodically (during the year), in order to ensure that funding for a proposal is authorised within few weeks. The overall goal of the ARTES Element 20 programme can be summarised as "the development of operational services for a wide range of users through the combination of different systems". To achieve this, the following objectives have been defined: Promotion of space applications to a wider range of users, especially those who are not aware of the benefits that space technologies can bring to them; Development of new operational services for these users, involving a broader participation by actors on both the demand and supply sides; Utilisation of at least two existing and different space assets (such as Satellite Communications, Earth Observation, Satellite Navigation, Human Spaceflight technologies and others), leading to a better exploitation of existing space capacity and know-how together with a better understanding of how they should evolve to meet user requirements; Cross-fertilisation across disciplines (e.g. impact of Climate on Health, on Energy, on Transport, etc...) together with the development of a consistent approach across Integrated Applications initiatives, to maximise their efficient and cost- effective implementation.
 
ARTES 20 operates via a 'Call for Proposals' which is always open. Partners respond with proposals as they find it opportune. The activities proposed in response to this 'Call for Proposals' must be relevant to above mentioned ARTES 20 programme objectives. Although not a competitive tender action, the ARTES 20 Call for Proposals is published on EMITS in order to achieve a higher degree of visibility. The closing date that will be mentioned upon issue of the Call for Proposals is established solely for technical reasons connected with EMITS and can be disregarded.

ARTES 5.2 is the ESA Telecom - Technology programme for development of new technologies and techniques for satellite telecommunication. ARTES 5.2 operates with a 'Call for Proposals' which is always open. Industry responds with proposals as they find it opportune. The activities proposed in response to this 'Call for Proposals' must be relevant for the space segment or ground segment of a satellite telecommunications system. The content of an ARTES 5.2 contract shall address the introduction of new technologies and techniques in the initial stages of the development of a product and shall exclude qualification in case of a product for space and industrialisation in case of a product for ground. The product shall have a clear market potential. Essential characteristics of this programme are the proactive role of the Bidder in defining and proposing projects oriented to sustainable products (equipment, software, systems) in the wide area of satellite telecommunications and the sharing of funding by ESA and industry/businesses for the development of the new technology to be used in the products. Although not a competitive tender action, the ARTES 5.2 Call for Proposals is published among these in order to achieve a higher degree of visibility.
