Objective:The objective of the activity is to design, develop and test a proof of concept for a M2M broadcast system based on commercial-of-the-shelf low-power terrestrial machine-to-machine communication standards. The activity shall use model-based system engineering methodology.The activity shall deliver an end-to-end hardware test bed to validate the broadcast system. This shall includetraffic generation tools, uplink gateway, satellite system emulator and end-user nodes. Furthermore, the activity shall deliver practical guidelines related to the use of model-based system engineering.Targeted Improvements:Extending todays M2M satellite broadcast systems addressable users from dedicated receivers to millions of terrestrial devices.Description:The development of the so-called low power wide area networks (LPWAN) have led to the existence of <$4 devices that are currently being deployed and used by millions. There is an opportunity for European and Canadian industry to offer very low data rate broadcast services to such devices by exploiting their frequency agility and reusing terrestrial waveforms. Possible waveform solutions could be e.g. terrestrial ETSI paging standards, LoRa or NB-IoT multicast extensions. Nonetheless, some adaptations may be needed, but shall be kept to the minimum tomaximise compatibility.The activity will develop a broadcast system based on commercial-of-the-shelf low-power terrestrial machine-to-machine communication standards capable of addressing LPWAN devices. The activity will develop the necessary adaptations for theterrestrial standards to work in a satellite environment. The activity will implement and validate the end-to-end system concept ina hardware test bed. This shall include traffic generation tools, uplink gateway, satellite system emulator and end-user nodes.Theactivity shall follow a Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) approach and shall produce a first version of a handbook on how to apply this methodology to the development of satcom systems.
