From 20 to 21 June 2018 the international community will gather in Vienna for UNISPACE+50, a special segment of the 61st session of theCommittee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). UNISPACE+50 will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary (1968 – 2018) of the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. This is the fourth UNISPACE Conference organised by COPUOS since being established, in 1959. Romania, one of the 24 founding members of COPUOS, has taken part in all previous UNISPACE conferences held in 1968, 1982 and 1999.

Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, the first and only Romanian cosmonaut and Honorary President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), is one of the VIP guests confirmed to attend this year’s ESA Open Days. The event will take place at the ESTEC technical centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, on 8 October 2017.

Two asteroids are now named after Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), and Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, the first and only Romanian cosmonaut. The new asteroid names ─ (10466) Marius-Ioan (Piso) and (10707) Prunariu ─ have been announced in the circular published by the International Astronomical Union in April 2017. The names have been suggested by the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy.
