Satellite images show the Delta wildfire behind the smoke

On the evening of 14 September 2019, a powerful fire broke out in the Danube Delta, near Mila 23. More than 10 hectares of dry vegetation burned. The two images, made public by TerraSigna, were acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel – 2 satellites on 15 September and show the place of the fire.

The images show the wildfire using two different techniques. The image on the left was obtained using visible light observations, while the one on the right was obtained by combining SWIR bands — short wavelengths in infrared. This technique allows for a more accurate view of the area affected by the wildfire and is frequently used in obtaining data from a land section covered by smoke.

The firefighters' intervention was hampered by darkness and by the swampy terrain. The affected area was surrounded by water channels, so there was no danger of fire propagation.

Since the beginning of the year, hundreds of hectares of vegetation have burned in the Danube Delta. The migratory birds that make their nests in the area were most severely affected as out of control fires cause long-term damage to the environment.
