Online meeting with Mirel Bîrlan, astronomer

on 12 May 2020

The Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) invites you on Friday, 15 May 2020, from 15:00, to attend an online meeting with Mirel Bîrlan, from the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy and the "Observatoire de Paris". Mr. Bîrlan will talk about "How we run after asteroids in space research".

The event is organised by ESERO, a project of the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with ROSA, and can be followed live on the ESERO Romania Facebook page.

The deepening of asteroid knowledge in the context of space research began in the 1990s and has grown dramatically since. Mirel Bîrlan will present the history of these discoveries from the perspective of a researcher in astronomy, paying attention to the scientist’s role in the results obtained by the instruments on board of various space missions.

Mirel Bîrlan holds a PhD in fundamental astronomy, celestial mechanics and geodesy from the Paris Observatory (1997) as well as in physics from the University of Bucharest (1998).

A graduate of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Bucharest (1986), he is the author and co-author of 115 articles in peer-reviewed journals, coordinator for 9 PhD theses in astronomy and planetology. He is also a national representative for Romania at the International Astronomical Union and the European Astronomical Society, as well as the President of the Romanian National Astronomy Committee.
