On 14 February 2017, a press conference to announce the 2017 edition of Asteroid Day will take place from five different locations: Luxembourg, Berlin, Silicon Valley, Bucharest and London. The Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) is a partner of the Asteroid Day campaign. The live connection from Bucharest will be done from the Cisco Centre, where Marius-Ioan Piso, President of the Romanian Space Agency and Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, the first and only Romanian cosmonaut, will participate.
The event is broadcasted starting 15:30 (local time in Romania) at http://asteroidday.org/pressconference, where members of the general public can also tune in to watch. Media representatives who want to remotely participate to address questions to the participants are required to connect through the WebEx platform (details here).
The press conference gathers key speakers around the globe, introduces new partners and gives a preview of events to be held on 30 June. Among the key speakers are:
- Danica Remy and Grig Richters, Co-founders, Asteroid Day;
- Marius-Ioan Piso, President of the Romanian Space Agency;
- Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, the first and only Romanian cosmonaut;
- Patrick Michel, Principal Investigator Asteroid Impact Mission;
- Franco Ongaro, Director of Technology, Engineering & Quality and Head of ESTEC Establishment.
Asteroid Day is a UN recognised event, held each year on 30 June, with the purpose to raise awareness on asteroids and ways in which our planet can be protected from them. 30 June marks the greatest asteroid impact in recent history, which took place in Tunguska, Siberia, in 1908. This year’s press conference is organised on the eve of the anniversary of the Chelyabinsk asteroid impact.
