World Space Week, 2017 edition

on 09 August 2017

The Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), in its capacity as national coordinator, invites you to take part at the 2017 edition of World Space Week (WSW), the largest public event in the world dedicated to the celebration of space, which takes place each year between 4 – 10 October. Romanian organisation and institutions can participate at the event by organising educational and other activities meant to promote the space benefits, all centred around this year’s theme – „Exploring New Worlds in Space”.

„World Space Week is an opportunity to show to the general public how space exploration can contribute to the betterment of the human condition. In addition, it is a very good context to attract the young generation towards science and technology. It requires a concerted effort to reach local communities, this is why I invite as many of you to take part at the event with activities as varied as possible”, states Virgiliu Pop, researcher at the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) and responsible for education.

Participation to World Space Week as an organiser is open to any organisation or institution that wants to promote space benefits towards local communities. The type of activities remains at the choice of the organisers and can range from: exhibitions, public debates, conferences, festivals, movie projections, to name just a few. The events should adhere to the annual theme, „Exploring New Worlds in Space”, which is focused on identifying the next space exploration objectives: the Moon, Mars and beyond. The activities can be addressed to pupils, employees, governmental or media representatives, the public at large etc.

Organisations that want to join WSW are invited to add their event to the global activities calendar and promote the participation at the World Space Week by using the materials found on the official website of the event, among which the event’s hashtag #WSW2017. At the end, each organiser will submit an activity report with the number of attendees, media coverage and photographs from the events.

The Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) is the national coordinator of the activities unfolded in Romania with the occasion of World Space Week. The Romanian Space Agency signed an agreement with the Ministry of National Education.

„In several other editions, Romania has been among the countries with the highest number of happenings during World Space Week. In 2016, 2.700 events took place globally, in 86 countries, and 200 of them happened in Romania. We hope that this year, too, we will see a large number of activities taking place”, added Virgiliu Pop.

About World Space Week

The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year during the same period: 4 – 10 October, since these dates commemorate two events: 4 October 1957 — launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration and 10 October 1967 — the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

World Space Week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association (WSWA). The WSWA leads a global team of National Coordinators, who promote the celebration of World Space Week within their own countries. In Romania, the event is coordinated by the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA).

Starting with the first edition, World Space Week has grown into the largest public space event on Earth.
