The winners of the 2017 National CanSat Competition

on 28 April 2017

The finals of the 2017 National CanSat Competition took place on 19 – 23 April. The event was organised by ESERO Romania, a project of the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA).

The winners of the 2017 edition are:

First Place: TOMIS III team, Mircea cel Batran National College, Constanta;
Second Place: Spartans CanSat team, Constantin Carabella National College, Targoviste;
Third Place: Late Night Engineers team, International Informatics High-school, Bucharest.

All seven participating teams launched their CanSats from the George Valentin Bibescu Aerodrome in Ploiesti.

CanSats represent a simulation of a satellite integrated in the volume and shape of a standard beverages can with a volume of 330 millilitres. The participants had as a main mission to include in the beverage can all the specific subsystems of a satellite.

Prior to launch, the teams had to pass a technical test, during which the mini satellites were checked to comply with launching conditions (weight, size, radio communication and other specific items).

The mini-satellites were launched from a helicopter, from an altitude of one kilometre. They collected data that the team later on analysed.

The secondary mission of team TOMIS III focused on analysing habitability conditions. The secondary mission of team Spartans aimed to determine the position of the satellite, the humidity and luminous intensity. The secondary mission of team Late Night Engineers tried to land on a specific spot using paragliding.

The team who won the first place, TOMIS III, qualified directly to the European finals of the competition, organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) in Bremen, Germany, between 28 June – 2 July.

The 2017 CanSat Competition was organised by ESERO Romania, with the support of the Technical College “Elie Radu” from Ploiesti, the Prahova County School Inspectorate, the Superior School of Civil Aviation and Professor  Adrian Mehedinti, Space Ambassador for Region 3 South and chair of the local organising committee.
